Sober up now...
"The ungilded truth is that the planet, at least as regards its sustenance of mankind and thousands of other species, is irredeemably fucked. Toast. And we cannot fix it, only slow down the inevitable, and hopefully settle out at some level which, though desolate by today's standards, we are still in a breathing and shitting state of existence."
That's kinda how I see it. Some German Greens were saying this back in the early eightees.
So, hurrah for Obama. Okay. But not bliss, bliss, bliss.
We as a society are doing the same thing to the planet that the bankers and other super-rich have been doing to the economy: taking short term material gains and ignoring the long term consequences. We should have spent the last 30 years trying to make a sustainable society, and if we don't start now, we'll just be screwed worse than we already are.
We can Hope (TM) for moving the American political and economic systems a hair toward fairness or justice or sanity after more than 30 years of moving toward plutocracy-- and that really would be a good thing-- but we'll be stupid to be satisfied with that.
